Science

“A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science”

Department for Education, 2015

At Thornton Primary school, we want children to develop a real sense of wonder about the world around them. That is why we use White Rose Science to support the teaching of science across Key Stage 2. White Rose Science provides exciting, engaging and carefully planned learning opportunities that help children build their scientific knowledge step by step.

Lessons are designed to encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas and make sense of the world through practical investigations and hands-on experiences. We believe that science is best learned when children are curious, active and involved in their learning. Through White Rose Science, children are encouraged to think critically, make predictions, carry out investigations and explain their findings using scientific vocabulary.

Learning is revisited regularly so that children can make connections between topics and develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts. Our science curriculum goes beyond the classroom wherever possible. We enrich learning through outdoor experiences and trips, cross-curricular links and opportunities to explore real-life scientific issues. This helps children see the relevance of science in everyday life and inspires them to become confident, inquisitive learners.

By the time children leave Thornton, we hope they will have developed not only strong scientific knowledge and skills, but also a lifelong curiosity about the world and a confidence to ask questions, explore new ideas and discover answers for themselves.
