Year 3 Topic 2

This is the UK: What kind of place is it?

Geography - Topic 2 - Autumn

To help engage and excite the pupils about their new topic, the children will begin by looking at different pictures and images of animals, food and places. They will work in small groups to sort the pictures and images according to where in the UK they think they are found.

In this geography topic, the children will be learning about the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas, developing their ability to locate the UK on a globe and world map, as well as annotate maps with key information. They will explore the countries and capital cities of the UK, finding out more about each city and its significance. The children will also study the geographical features of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, using a range of resources such as atlases, maps, photographs and Google Earth to locate and name mountains, rivers, lakes and other landmarks. Through this work, they will build their knowledge of the UK’s geography, improve their map skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the physical and human features that make each part of the UK unique.

By the end of this unit, children will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to describe the UK and what kind of place it is.

In their science topics; Nutrition and Rocks the children will learn about food, healthy eating, and rocks through a series of engaging steps. They will begin by exploring the five food groups and understanding how these contribute to a balanced diet, before comparing different diets, including those of animals, to see how nutritional needs can vary. They will also consider the issue of food waste, learning what it is and how we can reduce it to help the environment. In addition, the children will investigate rocks by identifying, grouping and testing their properties, before carrying out a local rock survey to apply their knowledge in a real-world context. Through these activities, they will develop their scientific enquiry skills and build a deeper understanding of healthy living and the natural world.
