Year 5 Topic 2

Europe: what is it like to live in north Italy?

Geography - Topic 2 - Autumn

To introduce the new topic, children will look at some pictures and have a discussion about the link between them. The children will use their geographical knowledge to identify the links between the pictures and the topic they are going to learn this term.

In geography, children will have the opportunity to explore Northern Italy. Children will be learning about how to locate Northern Italy and Italy on a map and to identify the lines of latitude and the equator. Children will get the opportunity to compare the physical and human resources in different parts of Northern Italy. They will look at the physical geography, transport links, towns and villages and tourism to the region.

In English children will be writing two narratives and a formal letter. They will base this on the books Run Wild and Rescuing Titanic.

In science, children will look at the solar system and the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the Sun. They will investigate how we get day and night and learn that the Sun is a star at the center of our solar system and that it has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune (Pluto was reclassified as a ‘dwarf planet’ in 2006). We will also learn that a Moon is a celestial body that orbits a planet (Earth has 1 moon; Jupiter has 4 large Moons and numerous smaller ones).
