English as an Additional Language

At Thornton, we recognise and celebrate bilingual ability. We understand that majority of our children speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). We appreciate that these children do not necessarily have learning difficulties and they may be at the early stages of developing an understanding of English language.  Therefore, our priority as a school is to model, teach and embed children's reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and Standard English.

EAL pupils also have access to an online EAL programme called Flash Academy to support their language acquisition.
