Year 6 - Topic 5

Science - Adaptions and Variations

Children are introduced to the term variation for the first time. They have used the term organism previously and described an organism as a living thing. They now extend this to explore the term species as a group of similar organisms where two parents can reproduce to create offspring. They also learn that variation refers to differences between organisms.

The children will understand how offspring can inherit different genes and characteristics from their parents. They will also be learning about different animals and how they adapt to their habitats. The children will also be learning about Charles Darwin and how he developed his theory of evolution.
