Year 6 Topic 4

Year 6 - Topic 4

Geography - Sustainable World: do it matter how we live?

In this topic, children will be learning about what sustainability is and how they can reduce their carbon footprint. The children will also be learning about fossil fuels and what people can do to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Year 6 will also be learning how food travels to its destination and which foods have the highest carbon footprints. The children will also learn about how to lower their carbon footprint. The children will learn about biodiversity and give some reasons as to why nature matters to the sustainable world. Finally, the children will also research different cities and how some cities can be more sustainable.

In science, during Topic 4, the children will look at two areas. Firstly, the children will look at the circulatory system. They will be able to describe how the circulatory system works and they will be able to identify the different parts of the human heart. The children will also have the opportunity to learn about blood cells and they will also learn about what the functions of the white and red blood cells are. The children will also learn about the importance of the heart and how oxygenated and deoxygenated blood travels around the body. They will also learn about how blood flows through the heart and what stages it takes to travel through the heart and around the body to other vital organs. The children will also have the opportunity to learn about what blood vessels are and what the features of different blood vessels. They will learn about the arteries, veins and capillaries.

In the second science unit, the children will learn about the importance of a healthy diet and how it can benefit the human body. They will also learn about the dangers of drugs and cigarettes so that they can see how putting harmful chemicals and substances in their body can affect their health. The children will learn how nicotine in cigarettes can make them addictive to people. They will also have the opportunity to conduct a heart rate experiment and they will be able to understand how the heart works under conditions which include moderate exercise. The children will measure their heart rates and they will see what effect exercise has on the body and the heart rate. They will learn that the more intense exercise a person does the quicker the heart beats which in turn creates more beats per minute as the heart has to work harder to pump blood around the body.
