Year 5 Topic 1

Year 5 Topic 1

This topic builds on the children's knowledge about artefacts and archaeologists from previous years. It develops their understanding of Anglo-Saxon England by introducing details about Anglo-Saxon society and culture.

The children will be go to the hall to meet an Anglo-Saxon person.  Mr Ryall will talk to the children in role of an Anglo Saxon. We will be looking at the cause and effect of migration and invasion. Considering what weapons were used by the people at the time. Role playing activities. Making observations of the artefacts.  This will take place in the Old Hall.

The topic will begin with a visit from a real life Anglo-Saxon! The children will be mesmerised as the Anglo-Saxon visitor talks to them about the cause and effect of migration and invasion, discussing and seeing what weapons were used by the people at the time and taking part in some role play activities.

Big and strong, powerful and brave, the Saxons wave their battle axes and brandish their swords as they begin to invade Britain’s shores. Sail back to the Dark Ages, where battles were rife and fear reigned. Find out about the lives of the Saxons, including how they lived and where they came from. Children will be part of a virtual tour of the Staffordshire Hoard. Here, they will become historians themselves and use historical terminology to describe what was found. At the end of the project, we’ll reflect on what it would have been like to be a child during these troubled times. They will learn that children have not always had the same rights as they do today.
