Blue Abyss - Summer 1
The children will begin to understand the importance of insects and bugs in our eco-system. Insects play a huge role, they are part of the pollination cycle, nutrient recycling, the food cycle, population control and help our environment in many ways... Working collaboratively, the children will build bug hotels to provide a safe habitat for creatures and wildlife. A well-built hotel can shelter anything from hedgehogs to toads, solitary bees to bumblebees, and ladybirds to woodlice. Over the weeks, they will observe the wildlife living in their new habitats and begin to investigate new living things. To encourage more wildlife into our environment children will also create bird feeders to encourage a variety of birds into our school grounds, enabling the children to observe common birds that are native to the United Kingdom such as blackbirds, blue tits, goldfinches, magpies, robins and sparrows.
This half term, our writing lessons will strengthen cross curricular links to our topic Blue Abyss. During the first three weeks, the children will focus on researching and drafting paragraphs to create an information text about living things in the seas and oceans. The final two weeks, they will write an adventure narrative linked to the story ‘The Girl with the Shark’s Teeth’ written by Cerrie Burnell.
In science lessons, we will explore how living things can be grouped in a variety of ways for example, vertebrate animals into groups such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals; and invertebrates into snails and slugs, worms, spiders, and insects. We will create classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in your local and wider environment. Also, we will begin to recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things. We'll explore examples of human impact (both positive and negative) on environments and the negative effects of population and development, litter or deforestation.
Our new topic is all about the Blue Abyss. We will learn how to locate the world’s oceans and seas using maps and atlases, how to label the layers of the oceans and identify which creatures live in each layer. We will begin to understand time zones in Australia and explain how they are different in day and night to U.K. We'll also research how people and living things have been affected by changes in the environment.
The focus for all computing lessons will surround the key theme E-safety. We will begin to understand the term ‘Phishing’ and how we can protect ourselves from online identity theft and the impact of the information that they put online, which leaves a digital footprint or trail. We will become aware of how to identify the risks and benefits of installing software including apps. We will also learn about ‘plagiarism’ and understand that copying the work of others and presenting it as their own is called 'plagiarism' and consider the consequences of plagiarism. We'll also begin to understand about healthy screen-time and be able to identify the positive and negative influences of technology on their health and the environment.
The art lessons, this half term, will be focusing on creating large collaborative paintings inspired by female Artists Maggi Hambling’s wave paintings. Throughout the half term, we will continue to explore colour mixing and mark making through the application of paint. We will then learn how to apply different tones through tints and shades and create their collaborative pieces after reflecting on the marks they have produced in each lesson.
Help your child prepare for their project
Oceans are remarkable and fascinating places that are full of life. Why not virtually visit the coast together to see an ocean or sea up close? You could also look at an atlas or online map to find out which seas and oceans surround Britain. Alternatively, work together to create an under-the-sea collage using different materials to represent the plants, creatures and water.
