Year 3 Summer Term (2)

Scrumdiddlyumptious - Summer 2

To help engage and excite the pupils about their new topic, the children will begin by looking at different food groups. They will carry out taste testing to taste a range of different foods from each food group; discussing the texture, smell and taste.

In English, we will be looking at a book called 'Cakes in Space'. The text follows a girl who travels to space with her family to move to a new planet but comes across some cakes that are alive! The children will be imagining what it would be like to travel to space and creating their own book title ideas! We will also be looking at Charlie and the Chocolate factory, the book and the scripted version, allowing the children to do a bit of acting and explore the features of (play) scripts and stafe directions.

In topic lessons, the children will enjoy a yummy journey of discovery, tasting fantastic fruits, venerable vegetables and tantalizing treats. They will find exciting recipes to read and write their own. The children will make tasty dishes from across the world and discover how good food helps them grow fit and strong. They will look at the history of John Cadbury and also find out how chocolate is made! The children will go on a virtual tour of Cadbury's World.

Throughout this unit, the children will be reminded of their Rights, with a focus on;

Article 24 (health and health services) Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment and education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Article 6 (life, survival and development) Every child has the right to life. Governments must do all they can to ensure that children survive and develop to their full potential.

Article 31 (leisure, play and culture) Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.

By the end of this unit, children will explore the tasty world of food, developing their knowledge of food groups, food origins, healthy eating and physical changes during cooking.
