Thornton Times

24th March 2017

Dear parents,

Last Wednesday a group of school councillors and head boys and girls visited the Houses of Parliament and had a lovely day out in London, walking in the sunshine across Westminster Bridge to the London Eye.  The events of this Wednesday were a chilling reminder of the threat to us all from those who wish to undermine the democracy we hold so dear in this country.  Democracy is a core British value. Every day, people from all over the world visit our Parliament and celebrate that value and the difference it makes to people's lives. Democracy doesn't come easily; over the years, people all over the world have fought and died for their right to have a vote. It's the most precious thing that we have. I am sure that you will all join with us to express our condolences to those who were killed or harmed during this hateful attack.

You can read full statements from Birmingham Councillors, the Birmingham Central Mosque and The Confederation of Sunni Mosque Midlands by visiting the homepage of our website.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Sue Simmons, Headteacher.

Year 6—Reading to the Reception Class

Last week the children in Owl Babies had some surprise visitors. The children were visited by Year 6, who came to read some stories to them. Samiya (BO6), Niyla (BO6), Eesa (GHO6), Hammad (SO6), Ibrahim (SO6), Safa (SO6), Raqeeb (EO6) and Aruba (EO6), all did a fantastic job reading stories to the younger children. They were very good at asking the Owl Babies lots of questions about the stories they were reading. Well done Year 6!

Houses of Parliament

Many of our young leaders from the School Council and Head Boy and Head Girl teams had a fantastic opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament last week and met with Liam Byrne our local MP. The children had a brilliant time learning all about democracy in England through hundreds of years and really impressed Mrs Simmons and Mrs Easthope with their political knowledge! The children were amazed by the views experienced on the London Eye, we had perfect weather and could see as far as Wembley Stadium’s arch! The events of this Wednesday in London came as a shock, only 7 days after we were in the very spot attacked. Whilst we were there the children were fascinated by the police officers working to protect us and had some great chats with them and the police officers were very impressed with the courteous behaviour of the children.

Maths Odyssey

On Tuesday 7th March Tawny Owl 4 and Great Horned Owl 4 classes took part in a Maths Odyssey session based on Ancient Egypt.  Howard Carter and Cleo did some quizzes with us and showed us what tasks could be done.  These are the tasks I remember:

Building the River Nile, Weighing Egyptian Gold, decoding Egyptian secret messages, making Pyramids out of cups.

The tasks were a lot of fun.

Laiba Naveed, Tawny Owl 4.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity

Women who live in Hodgehill are warmly invited to ‘Women in Conversation’ where you can meet one another and talk about issues facing you and our local community.  This will be a sixth monthly event. Why not leave the children at home and come along!
