Thornton Times

27th January 2017

Hi everyone!

This week has been a chilly one, so thank you for sending your children wrapped up nice and warm! I am sure you have seen we have had to restrict playground access due to the weather to keep everyone safe; thank you for supporting us.

We had some special visitors in our Star Pupil Assembly on Friday last week from Aspire Teaching and the Make a Wish Foundation. Three of our wonderful children were awarded prizes and will be enjoying trips to Drayton Manor and Legoland with their families!

Our new library is nearly complete ready for its upcoming launch. Thank you to all the staff and children who have worked hard to get it ready. Keep your eyes peeled for World Book Day activities in March and start thinking about costumes now!

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!

Phonics Workshop

We would like to invite Reception and Year 1 parents to come and join in with our Phonics on Thursday 2nd February at 9am.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see how we teach Phonics at Thornton and how you can further support your child at home. We will also be looking at the Phonics screening test.

If you would like to come, then please let your child’s class teacher know by Monday 30th January at the latest.

Miss Hussain.

Dinner Money

Today is the final day that all outstanding dinner money should be paid. All outstanding debts will be referred to Birmingham City Council’s debt collection. Thank you to all those parents who have paid this week.

Attendance Reminder

Well done to all the children who achieved 100% attendance last term, 349 pupils had 100% attendance!  Do you think you can make it 100% for the whole term?

Thank you to all the parents for working in partnership with us. It is very important that all children arrive to school on time. Please ensure your child is punctual to school as being late causes disruption to their learning. The school day starts at 8:45 am. Can you please notify the school before 9.00 a.m. if your child is going to be absent on that day otherwise it takes a great deal of time to chase up absent children by telephoning parents.

Please avoid booking dentist and doctor’s appointment during the school day – children have 13 weeks holiday and finish school at 3.30 p.m. so you should be able to get an appointment at these times. We do understand that hospital appointments sometimes cannot be changed but it is always worth asking!

The DFE has stated that every child in the United Kingdom should have at least 97% attendance. Frequent absence can add up to a considerable amount of lost learning and can seriously disadvantage your child in adult life. Absence disrupts the education of the individual pupil and the whole class. Children who do not attend regularly do not achieve well in exams and find it difficult to maintain friendships. Everyone at Thornton aims for 97% attendance – even the grown-ups!.

From now on all absence will be unauthorised if your child’s attendance is below 97% unless medical evidence is provided. The following medical evidence will be accepted:-

Medical note from the Doctor on headed paper or surgery stamp

Medical appointment letter

Prescription Slip

Prescribed medication

Thank you for your co-operation – let’s see if we can hit that 97% this year.

The table below shows the top 10 classes attendance figures. Well done to Eagle Owl 3 who have achieved the top attendance in the school last week and are also have achieved the best attendance of the year so far. A special treat will be awarded to Eagle Owl 3 for this achievement.

On Wednesday 18th January, Year 2 visited the local corner shop.

Year 2, Wise Owls, would like to say a huge thank you to Nick’s Newsagents for participating in our Hot Task to end our unit of work “Money”.

The trip was very beneficial and helped the children’s understanding of money further.

SATs Meetings

Year 6 would like to thank all parents that attended our SATs meetings last Friday. It was really lovely to see such great attendance, as over 100 parents came to the meeting. Our website will soon have the information you need to help your child through the SATs. If you require any extra support please do not hesitate to come and see us. We are more than happy to help out.
